Dylan survived the firework season!

Dylan is getting better every year with the fireworks. I think it helps that we don't live so close to liberty and sugarhouse parks where they have big firework shows on the 4th and the 24th. The 24th is a Utah Holiday so they have big fireworks all over the place.

I forgot to give Dylan the Acontinum that my holistic vet gave me to calm him down during the firework season. He did alright without it. I put him in the bedroom and let him chew on a bully stick for a while why we went out to watch Paul's neighborhood fireworks.

I did take him out to do some C/T while the fireworks were going. I kept a tight hold on his leash though and tried to get him to play and stay engaged. He did okay if we were closer to the house but I tried a bit of targeting to get him to move closer to the fireworks and more out in the open. There was a point at which it got to be too much and he would no longer eat the yummy homemade jerky that Paul makes. We backed up a bit and did some sits and tricks for C/T. He was a very good and brave boy and I am so proud that he was able to do anything outside with so many fireworks going off.

I'm sure there will be a few more fireworks for the next few days but we made it through the worst of it! What a brave boy!!

Glad to hear that everybody survived the fireworks at your place too! You mentioned that your vet had given you something to use with Dylan. Do you notice a big difference when you use it as opposed to when you don't? Just curious.

Yes there is definitely a difference. If I give it to him a few days in advance of the fireworks he seems not to notice them. Of course, I am at home with him and he is indoors. It may be different if he were outdoors.

Acontinum is a homeopathic remedy my holsitic vet gave me. It's also good to help with overheating and numerous other things that I can't remember. It's good for nervous dogs to help them calm down and stops panic attacks. I am going to try to use it with Dylan when he meets new dogs too and carry it when we are hiking in the heat. I haven't tried it yet for anything but fireworks but my boyfriend doesn't do well in the heat so one of these days he may try it too. It's supposed to be great for humans and dogs!!

Those fireworks are so hard on the animals. It's really too bad there is not a good solution.

Thanks for the explanation of what Acontinum is and what it does. I would be really interested to hear how it works if you do decide to try it when Dylan meets new dogs.

Our newest rescue Rogue is so reactive and anxious in so many different situations I would love to find something that would help her. We don't have any holistic vets down here. In fact, since it's a rural area our choice of vets is very limited at all.

I have a chiropractic appointment on Friday for Rogue in Park City so I was hoping that I could talk to the vet up there about some possibilities for reducing her anxiety levels.

Anyway, sorry for rambling, and thanks again for the information!

Marie, the vet you are seeing in Park City is the same vet that gave me the acontinum.

I am going to try to get a calming cap and start doing introductions with the calming cap and the acontinum combined. Dylan is reactive and very fearful of many things so I hope the combination of the two will help him. My problem is also that we don't have many new dogs to meet these days because I can't let dylan just randomly meet other dogs that I don't know because of his issues.

Awesome! I wondered if it might be the same vet. :-) I'm excited to meet with her. I've heard good things from several people. It's just such a bummer for me that she's 3 hours away!

Maybe even though it's just a chiropractic appointment, she'll be willing to let me ask her advice on what might help Rogue.

I've looked at the calming caps too, but haven't tried them yet.

Thanks!

She is wonderful! I am sure you will love her. Everytime I leave there I feel so happy that I went!! Usually she is pretty open to chatting while she is doing the chiropractic too.

We were just there friday but couldn't go for the agility day this week because Marley needed more than the treatments offered. We got in on the next agility day on the 22nd though.

Sux that you are so far away. Would be nice to meet you and the shelties sometime. Maybe if there's a trial here in SLC I will stop by and say what's up to you and Cyn!

That would be soo much fun! We'll be coming up for the Labor Day agility trial at Linleigh Farms. Always is nice to have an actual face to put with the names that we get to know online.

I'll have to let you know how our appointment goes. :-)

I can verify to the calming cap...Works wonders, at least for my girl.

Glad to hear about Dylan.

And we LOVE Dr H up in Park City. She will take time and answer all your questions!

Fireworks are just scary, and I don't like them anymore myself. I'm glad Dylan did well. Our dogs did pretty good, too!
